Edge of Tomorrow
Feb. 7th, 2015 04:39 pmLast weekend,
bateleur and I watched Edge of Tomorrow. It was very good and very difficult to write a spoiler-free review for - but that's why I have spoiler tags.
Edge of Tomorrow is a great science-fiction film with two well-cast leads (Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt), some nice minor roles and a really good concept. It's a big, visual, action piece, but also has a fairly consistent plot. I like that Tom Cruise is playing a smarmy ad man whilst Emily Blunt does come across as a soldier.
If someone had asked me whether I thought Groundhog Day meets Aliens would work, I'd have said no. Which shows what I know. Because, this was really good. It repeats just enough to get the point across, without leaving you sick of the scenes. It then leaves a scene alone when it's no longer needed. It copes well with the fact that every restart sets people back to being strangers whilst still managing to construct friendships. Very nicely done.
