The Tarot series is, sadly, discontinued and therefore is not described on the BPAL site.
The Emperor
A review1 I found reads: "This is a really confident, masculine smell. Regal almost. It's earthy, woody and slightly smoky. I definitely smell sandalwood here, and probably some frankincense and a wood note (cedar maybe?). Possibly some patchouli too, and something green and slightly herby.
This scent evokes an aura of competence and power, yet of benevolence as well. It somewhat reminds me of the way my grandfather looked before his final illness. Even into his late sixties her still had his hair color, casual dress meant not having to wear a jacket and a tie and had such an air of dignity. He had a reserved and somewhat stern demeanor, but he always gave the best hugs and to everyone who knew him he was truly kind. He was firm, disciplined, but also compassionate and fair. Which is what The Emperor says to me."
Another one says: "I'm quite sure this contains white sandalwood - that must be the woodsy note I was smelling earlier (I always think that white sandalwood smells a little like cedar. Am I odd?). This also contains that Beth's Special Blend of Tarot Herbs and Spices, you know - that indescribable greenness that is most of these blends. Once on my skin, this is not nearly so masculine and is actually quite pretty. I can't pick out any individual notes once it is dry - it is just a warm and benevolent smell."
In the bottle: <sniff> <sniff> Is there anything in there?
On the skin: Umm... faintish. And I'm not sure what to make of it. Slightly herbal and incensy? A touch of citris?
An hour later: Not bad, and it lasts rather well. But not quite good enough for a definite keeper.
The Empress
A review1 I found reads: "Roses, roses, roses! Not the freshly cut wet rose of their Rose Red, nor the dry, Victorian rose of their Old London. This is a bundle of mixed roses of every shape, size and color. There is something regal and haughty under the roses... sandalwood, perhaps? Or a dry musk? Lovely and bountiful. The scent of a benevolent, beautiful young queen. I love this perfume!"
Another one says: "Hm, this one has me stumped. I don't know what to say -- I was so excited to try it because of the raves it's gotten from everyone else, but then out of the vial I didn't like it at all. It has a sharpness to my nose, a bitter undertone that a couple of people have mentioned, that makes it really unappealing to me -- I know I have ridiculously sweet taste in scents though. On my skin, the bitterness started to fade almost immediately, and now it's a pleasant enough riot of roses, but there's something... woody, I guess, underneath it that just makes it sharp to me. It almost smells a bit chemically, just not sweet or mellow enough for my tastes. It's too... fierce a rose for me I guess. Maybe I did like Spellbound better?! I swapped my imp of Spellbound and got this instead because I thought it would be more delicate and elegant, less dark, but now I think the musk in Spellbound helped mellow it out on my skin and this doesn't have that. I do like it, now that it's calming down, it does have a certain strength that appeals to me. I will wait and see if any moods present themselves where I feel like wearing it."
In the bottle: Again quite faint, although not as much as the Emperor was. I can't describe the smell though.
On the skin: I reckon slightly wood, slightly floral and incensey.
An hour later: Again, this lasts. And it's really growing on me. Everyone else is screaming roses, so I guess this must be them!
1 Note: I tend to put BPAL on before I hunt reviews.
