Final Fantasy X
As weekends go, that one was spent doing less than most. Dom (
bateleur) and I are now moving towards the last sequence of battles of the Final Fantasy X game.
As the Final Fantasy series goes, X has the best fighting sequences (strategy actually pays off) and also I would count Blitzball as being the best subgame. However the plot has become more linear with each incarnation, and the end game bosses are more tiresome and unbalanced.
What do I mean by that ? Well in terms of unbalanced, fighting them with the same party which has just completed the rest of the game (but not done many/any subquests) is almost impossible. This was also true of VIII and IX - I think VII was the last of the sequence where you could face the end boss (Sephiroth) with a non-powered-up party.
In terms of tiresome, they seem to have more and more stages. In VII there were two fighting stage to the Sephiroth (I don't count the last one for obvious reasons), in VIII there were four stages to Ultimecia and in IX there were three (or was it four ?) stages - the last being that totally gratuitous "never been seen before" machine-thingy. In X one of the pre-end bosses (Yunalesca) has already had three stages - I shudder to think what the end boss will be like.
However, the actual strategy of the "routine" fights is the best I have seen to date and the use of the Sphere Grid was inspired. Also, as far as Blitzball goes, I much prefer it to the card games in VIII and IX as both were far too random, and to the chocobo breeding in VII which was long, obscure and also (depending on the number of Greens used) depended on luck (my favourites were Black Chocobos). Whilst X's story is linear (and, like VIII and IX the party does not vary), at least the story is interesting. Plus there is evidence that you can do extra story bits (such as the Jecht Spheres) towards the end.
Today, it's back to work. Chasing players to send me Fallen Star characters, preparing for Sunday's Swordsmaster session, doing the household chores and, of course, dealing with Bea and Ryan.
Life is currently filled with Ryan-whines.

'Machine Thingy'
I must say, though, what really irritated me about the FFX yesterday was spending upwards of an hour and a half fighting Omega Weapon, dealing out (I estimate) well over 500000 damage and then finally dying only to discover that all the FAQs claim he has a mere 99999 hits. No he [!]ing doesn't. And all the newsgroups comments claim he's far too easy. Not this time he wasn't.
Grrr...
Re: 'Machine Thingy'
I didn't mention Omega Weapon 'cos we obviously hit a bug. Plus I'd rather not remember that fight.
Dawn.

Only just. When I got there I had done loads of stuff (I'd not done all the chocobo stuff because I never got the hang of that, even on later attempts with walkthroughs) though by no means had I gone out of my way to power up. However, I finally only beat him by pure chance I think. It took me about a squillion attempts to beat him to the extent that I wanted to turn around and leave the crater to power up further. Unfortunately I couldn't so I had to just keep soldiering on.
In the end I made it so your point does stand. However, considering I had opened many a can of whup ass on pretty much everything else I had fought (except the occasional damn tonberry) I think it was quite a scary step.
As for the FFVIII end boss... I never properly saw one of the forms since my graphics card couldn't handle it. :) I am still proud of the fact that I still managed to beat it though. :) Mainly because I new the combat system well enough and the menus did jsut about work (since new stuff appeared and if in big trouble I could pause and it would redraw the screen). There was large amount of summoning and powering up the summoned thingy though. Also I think I failed to see one of the GF summonation things. Eden I think it was called... Must replay that at soe point with my newer shinier graphics card. :)
And I will give you a more full write up of the Fallen Star character. Its not going to be that much exciting stuff I'm sure. Maybe a few cthuloid books of occult... Actually maybe not. :)
