DorsetCon - Or EyeCon
Dorset, good weather, eighteen roleplayers and the little matter of the (ex) Regent.
Saturday
It was a bit hot for a journey, but good weather for the approaching week. We arrived, inspected our new home and then
bateleur did the usual of getting people to roll percentage dice to allocate rooms. People unpacked, starting with the Band Hero kit in the lounge and
bateleur got on with the cooking (with a little help from me). The evening included
quisalan making the first batch of the now-traditional gin and tonics (which I think made an appearance every night) and various other people opened wine, champagne and other things.
Sunday
Alliance of Traitors stuff: The day began with the GMs briefing the characters1 on everything that had happened since the previous year. Also on the stat updates and I discovered that Troy had swapped her tank for lightning reflexes. Then into the first day of play where we got to meet the new Roenfall characters Mourne (Toby's professor), Gio (
metame's navigator) and Portia (
quisalan's investigator). Then the new guys from Altekal - Khan Prince Sekhemkhet (Alistair) and his three doctors Chanalli (
chrisvenus), Milizia (
wildrogue) and Ozatlan (
shadowjon). They told us that their land (Altekal) was under an evil influence from the West which had turned up at about the time the (ex) Regent had exited Roenfall. We put two and two together (although it was some time later before we got to confirm it did indeed make four) and agreed to help.
The journey across the wilderness began and included two bears (BEARS!) which Troy personally failed to fight, bandits, a burst water barrel and the spikes that the (ex) Regent navigated across the land by. Then we reached a village where the Prince was summoned to another village because "it was foretold". The Prince decided to go along and was shown the Fate Stones of Tuocten which the party promptly translated to paper (mainly through Gio, Llew and Laurel having the skills and the parchment) and this was later to become an important piece of plot.
Non-roleplaying: Other things to happen during the day were the arrival of loads of shopping (cunningly ordered over the internet by
leathellin) and the evening meal was Mezze (I think) courtesy of
wildrogue. It was during the preparation for this that
two_nukes,
metame and I tried our respect hands at shelling walnuts without a nutcracker (I was pants at it). This was followed up with the Chapel Stairs Party of Chat and Cava (at which I showed off my birthday pack of cards1). There was also the start of my first Arkham game (Dulwich and Pharoh expansions, TheHattedOne,
two_nukes and
quisalan as other players).
Monday
Alliance of Traitors stuff: Monday was mainly more roleplaying. We arrived at the first of the cities and some of us visited the temple of Imotec along with the Prince. We returned to discover that Portia had been attacked in the warehouse district ("WHAT!" said the Prince) and we set out on a mission to deal with the outrage (don't attack the guest of a Prince). A thorough storming later and the warehouse in question was under our control and the two tainted people were dead. The other note I have is that the city tried to collect taxes from the Prince which involved a group of us heading to tax central. On leaving the city we called at a village where a doctor had been killed and determined that someone in the (ex) Regent's robes had killed him.
Non-roleplaying: Also on Monday we won the previous day's against Yig after what looked like an impossible-to-win-from early game. Then we did the second (and my last) Arkham game, this time with the Kingsport expansion (only) and slightly different players - TheHattedOne, Alistair,
two_nukes and
shadowjon. Monday evening was the roast dinner (thanks to
leathellin) and I think LittleBigPlanet made its first outing.
Tuesday
Alliance of Traitors stuff: Tuesday we reached the capital and discovered all foreigners would be arrested. So, various Roenfall people got arrested. Some were rescued from the prison complex by Mia giving orders in the name of her temple, but others ended up inside the Prince's estate and defending it against a large force. Those rescued from the prison complex came back with important information - Sasha was inside (aka
quisalan wanted her old character back). The Prince and his party escaped his estate and we discussed evening plans. This became two different events - firstly a party with a noble who had invited the Prince and the Roenfall diplomats (yes, whilst they were still likely to be arrested on sight) and secondly the prison break. As someone who attended both, I'm not talking about the party, the food or the slaves. Or the fact that Llew and Troy spent the evening wondering just how they had managed to offend Severin so much that he ordered them along (although we did discover that someone had been attacked near the waterfall in the palace, as the Prince said, four hours of tedium for four minutes of useful info). However the jailbreak, under Kerrith's management, went flawlessly.
Non-roleplaying: Tuesday evening was the end of the second Arkham game which we again won. It was also (I think?) Tapas food (from
wildrogue) plus various half-plans were made for Wednesday.
Wednesday
Non-roleplaying: This was the Day Off. Instead of roleplaying we divided into various subgroups (defined by drivers and their passengers) and went off to see the sights. In my case this was Maiden Castle and then a cream tea at West Bay3. I enjoyed the visits, but not as much as I might have done as I'd had a lousy night's sleep and was feeling out of it. Dinner was risottos (
leathellin and
metame) and this was the day that I was finally tempted by
ar_gemlad and Toby to try my hand at playing Band Hero. I enjoyed myself but stayed on "Easy" for the duration of the Con.
Thursday
Alliance of Traitors stuff: Back to the roleplaying and the Khan (yes, really the Khan - the country's leader) summoned the Prince and ordered him to investigate the Cursed City. This came about because the Prince had investigated the waterfall, found a dead body of a Roenfall man and also a Face that had been silenced (Faces were spirits of ancestors who offered advice to the Altekalans) and the Khan knew of a Face once becoming silent before - in the Cursed City). Turned out that the Cursed City had once been the dwelling place of The Alchemist and, after dealing with various traps and other things, we found his diary.
The Alchemist had once been Nicholas Turbin Von Rochemeer and was around three hundred years old. He had been experimenting with creating relics and had eventually decided that he could do this without them having corrupting influences and these would be necessary to prevent humanity from being wiped out by the same demonic powers used in relics. However, he himself had become too corrupted and needed to carry out a ritual to remove the evil influences... at a time which ties in with the curse (about one hundred and twenty years earlier4). The curse seemed to include malevolent trees and a multi-limbed monster. However, there was no trace of The Alchemist himself or clear indication of whether the ritual had worked (although, if it had, why hadn't he recovered his diary?). We also found an object amongst his possessions which mind controlled four of the party and caused them to throw it into the river out of our reach. We suspect we would have found it very interesting and useful.
After our Cursed City stuff the party split and half dealt with the new location shown by the map drawn on the Fate Stones of Tuocten and the other half (my half) travelled to another of the cities in the hope of Plot. The first party found another face who told them that the dead body near the dead face was that of the (ex) Regent. The second party also visited a face who gave us (Chanalli) directions to find a well of the Goddess that had been lost three thousand years earlier (this face also told me that the dead face in the capital had been killed by "The Eater" and this was not the same as the being who had destroyed the face in the Cursed City). The well turned out to be a ritual-halted prana generator which we got into thanks to Sevrin sacrificing a mouse (and requiring one to go in with us in case it was the only way out5). (A common comment was "I didn't know Severin had Prana Tech!" whenever we told the story) The generator had been shut down in a manner that tied in with the story about how the well was destroyed to wash away the Drowning Plague. We were then summoned back to the capital to discover that the grandson of the Khan - his most likely successor - had been murdered.
Non-roleplaying:
jezzidue and
bateleur cooked dinner which was a number of oriental dishes (and coconut milk, which I love!).
quisalan followed this up much later with apple and pear crumble after I'd wistfully talked about desserts and she realised we had the ingredients. I spent that evening mostly in the kitchen talking to
quisalan,
jezzidue and
two_nukes discussing films, dating and jobs.
Friday
Alliance of Traitors stuff: We gathered at the capital and dithered. We had an aborted attempt at storming a corrupted noble's house and but mostly bodded around until the Prince decided to march on the palace in response to word that the High Priest had sent forces there. We arrived, we hunted for the prana pool, we found the prana pool, then the corrupted guys arrived and all hell broke loose. Turns out that the (ex) Regent had been the one who had stolen the King's Eye and that was the object which was now in charge and corrupting people left, right and centre (it was "The Eater" - no wonder Wastbruch were cagey about what it did when it was stolen last game). The result was a massive fight involving a Boss and resistance rolls to be made every round to fight on the right side. We eventually won, we then took the amulet to the desert and destroyed it.
Troy now wants to hunt The Alchemist as she spent half the game convinced that he was the one who had taken the King's Eye and she doubts that he is dead.
Non-roleplaying: Sadly,
jezzidue had to leave early due, in an indirect fashion, to the ash cloud which I heard about for the first time on the last evening.
leathellin,
wildrogue and
quisalan made burgers, bread pudding and more crumble for the last meal. After that I did some packing and pottered around in and out of other groups.
Saturday
Saturday was an early departure including the now-traditional food auction in the kitchen and the round of hugs, photos and farewells in the car park. We all agreed we'd meet the same time next year - if not before!
So, an excellent week - I'm sorry it's over.
