Belated Athory Update

A rather reduced and all-male party continued their stay in Carnival, City of Quickest Ruler Changes.

The day before Elias returned, Lord Roland ([livejournal.com profile] ao_lai) spent sounding out the various political views of the group to determine a plan of action. This was a tricky business because, whilst the party were generally united in their interest in the Royal Jewels and dislike of the Valentin-Sarabella faction, they weren't sure what to do.

Then Elias returned and made several statements :
* He was concerned about the power of the royal jewels and wanted them in the hands of Lathanians.
* King Imharn (with his advisor Lawrence/Malthen) was the biggest threat to Lathany and should be opposed.
* The diplomatic group should aim to unite the Athory Dukes and Duchesses against the King.
* A concern that Yarrow might choose to back the King rather than join the Sarabella-Valentin alliance.
* He expected the assassins of the seventh marketplace to attempt to remove Taronus ([livejournal.com profile] chrisvenus) (because he was ruining business for them).
* He did not know the cause of the Lirrisorn attacks but suggested Lawrence/Malthen might be responsible (this theory was based on the timing of the attacks)
* The traitor Fidelma was in Nalor's Clearing in the Duchy of Oak.
* That Lathany had a treaty with the Duchy of the South.

As a result of Elias' concerns, Tengath ([livejournal.com profile] chrestomancy) went to the docks and watched the seventh marketplace in action. His abilities allowed him to discover that the attack on Duke Artallory of the Moon had been one of ten planned attacks, each aiming to remove a different leader of Athory. The assassins were furious because the attack on Duchess Catrina had been carried out in their territory. It seemed that the Rogue Stones were responsible for all ten attacks.

Lord Roland spoke with Duke Yarrow and told him the group's beliefs about the Royal Jewels and urged him to oppose the King and Malthen. Yarrow was troubled by these revelations, but agreed to be guided by the Lathanians. During the conversation Tengath and Gref ([livejournal.com profile] bateleur) discovered that the conversation was being spied upon. Gref followed the spies out of a secret passage and to an inn where they spoke with one of the inhabitants of the seventh marketplace. Gref reported this to his master.

Meanwhile, the rest of the party discussed the much-coveted royal jewels at length. Eventually they approached Duke Yarrow and requested to see them. Yarrow showed them the three pieces he had not handed over to Linos and his empathy mages. These were a silver ring set with spark-stone and blue stone, a gold ring set with Letizia and pink stone and a gold bracelet set with Letizia and spark-stone. The mages of the party tried the rings on.

The gold ring sent Tengath to the city of Chir Shrine facing an army. He returned when he removed the ring from his hand. The bracelet sent Lord Roland to face a giant Lirrisorn; again he returned when he removed it from his arm. It confirmed what they both suspected; that, in the wrong hands, these pieces would prove very dangerous.

Eventually Lord Roland decided that there was little chance of obtaining the full set of royal jewels and so Elias made arrangements for other agents to attempt to take them if and when another faction tried to steal them from Carnival. Instead Roland and Bryanna ([livejournal.com profile] quisalan) agreed to try and persuade the other Dukes and Duchesses to oppose the King, starting with Louise.

Elias and Heleth ([livejournal.com profile] venta) went to the Carnival docks and secured Captain Mirabel and The Jaye (the ship which had brought the party to Athory two months ago) to travel up the Tali Chirane back to Chir Shrine showing Lathany colours to prevent the surrounding army (that of the Oak and the South) from attacking.

This plan worked. The party arrived back at the seat of the Old Empire to see Valentin's creatures prowling the outer city, but leaving the new arrivals alone.

The inner two layers of Chir Shrine were much more crowded than previously, probably because the refugees of Gythfort had arrived. The party's arrival was watched my a crowded and the guards greeted the Lathanians warmly and quickly escorted them into the presence of the Duchess herself.

Louise was pleased to see them and to hear their news. She agreed that she was not happy to ally with the King, but the presence of Valentin and Sarabella's army was leaving her little time or choice. She also shared with them Lord Ordacory's findings on the royal jewels; that there had once been fourteen pieces. It seemed that the Carnival empathy mages had six pieces (the crown, pendant, two rings and two bracelets), Yarrow had three pieces (two rings and a pendant) but that five pieces (a sceptre and four rings) were still unaccounted for.

Next year should be the last Athory year when my Swordsmaster GMing comes to an end. It'll be interesting to see whether any of Athory is above water by then...
