Athorian politics and a dead snail

Yesterday a group of Chrises descended upon New Workshops for the latest installment of the Swordsmaster Athory campaign.

The majority of the time was spent in various political discussions of the "What are we going to do ?" variety. The game started with the players rather nervously making their quarters assassin-proof.

"Station two guards on the door, another inside and pull a bookcase across the secret passage entrance." said Roland. "I see those as the minimum safety requirements."

Fortunately, night-time produced no further assassins (invisible or otherwise) and the party awoke the following morning, still in their quarters and unharmed.

Taronus spent the morning hunting for his grandfather. He asked both the Duchess Catrina and Lord Yarrow to find out all they could for him and eventually discovered that Emeril had take a ship the previous morning and travelled to Haven (the capital of the Snake).

During his absence Steyner, adopted brother to Istan/Kalen and advisor to the King, arrived and produced family letters for the Lathany party. Lady Bryanna was irritated by her mother's letter which mentioned that her sister Una had a suitor without saying who it was. Steyner also brought money from the King, praise for the party's efforts to date, news of an heir to the Athory throne and word that the traitor Lady Fidelma was believed to be somewhere in Athory. In exchange, Lady Bryanna and Lord Roland briefed him on some of the problems which had been facing them.

The rest of the day was spent in carrying out research into the history of Athory (in Duchess Catrina's library) and in making preparations to leave for Haven. The research showed that an heir to the throne could make a claim for all of Athory; but would probably be removed from power by the Dukes and Duchesses within days, unless they had backing of some kind.

Additionally, Lady Bryanna made an agreement with the Duchess for the Masked Duchy and Lathany to exchange scholars so that each could study the culture and history of the other. The Duchess was surprised by the request, but quickly approved it.

In the evening Lord Roland met the Lady Kelly for dinner whilst Heleth visited the estate of Lord Heverel in response to the invitation he had given her at the High Summer Dance of Masks. Lord Roland was followed from the Court by a local man; however the young Lord quickly turned the tables on his tail. The man said he had been paid by the Rogue Stones; a claim which Roland was suspicious of.

Night time brought another vision and warning from Bryanna's strange protector. The vision was of Leonides Castle, the warning of the new heir to the throne.

"The royal jewels have been taken and one of the old blood walks the ninth path."

Morning brought an invitation from the Keeper of the Snake and a letter from Leonides urging the group to come to the castle immediately. Consequently the party left Carnival promptly, boarding the Lathany ship The Flying Fish bound to Haven, where they hoped to find another vessel to take them to Leonides castle.

The weather, which had been poor since the High Summer Dance, turned stormy as the ship launched onto the ocean. This was particularly unfortunate as the Lirrisorn chose to attack, forcing everyone on deck to defend the ship. Lord Roland suffered heavy injuries but, fortunately, the defenders won and the rest of the voyage was comparatively peaceful.

The party arrived at Haven more or less in one piece. The Keeper's carriage was sent for them and they arranged to spend the night recovering from their ordeal at sea before hiring another boat in the morning...

Meanwhile, the twins are not pleased. The musical snail has died again, producing a mere whisper of a noise. They can no longer play "Old McDonald had a farm"/"Twinkle, twinkle little star"/etc. over the soundtrack of "The Fellowship of the Ring". And it is Mummy's fault. Definitely. She had better buy some new batteries before discontent really sets in.
