A small victory

A few years ago (2003 in fact), [livejournal.com profile] bateleur bought me Jade Cocoon 2 for Christmas. I finished the main game and rather enjoyed it, but I never completed the post-main-game sub-quests and associated championship. This year, back in August, I picked it back up off the shelf and, starting a new game, I resolved to do just that.

About ten minutes ago, I did it. I defeated the reigning champion after many failures and many more levelling-ups and got to see the second end sequence. It's the first game I've played that has two (and only two) sets of end credits, somewhat different to each other.

I smugly feel I have reached the end of a tiny era.

Ah, the really quite brilliant Deus X gives you a choice of three endings; and it's not a case of 'this is good, this is bad' it's a case of 'what you pick is important, you can't be sure of the consequences and there are pro's and con's to them all'. One of the best endings to a game I've come across.

And congratulations BTW.

Thanks.

What sort of game is Deus X?

First Person Shooter with lots of roleplay elements. Well, by lots I mean more than any other FPS had at the time. Unusually it is possible (but much harder) to go through the whole thing without killing anyone. (you get a decent selection of non-lethal weapons)

It's quite old now (99?) but I've found it bore replaying a few times.

I'm not good at big on first person shooters except Doom (and Doom II) which I could handle at "Hurt Me Plenty" difficulty (and, for the original, "Ultra Violence" once) using keyboard controls. However, a good storyline might tempt me.

How difficult's the shooty bit and can difficulty be set?

Difficulty can be set. The lowest level is makes life really rather easy, the highest level is getting toward realistic in a 'damn, I was shot with a pistol and it killed me' kind of way.
