An Advantage of the Dentist
Yesterday I had a dental check up. This translated into a great day out.
My parents came down to babysit so that I could travel across London for my check-up. Thing is, I've had lots of problems with my teeth (mainly across my teenage years) and consequently a good dentist is worth keeping. So my dentist is in Finchley, despite the fact that I moved out of my (shared) house there back in the summer of 94.
This meant that I could pop into Oxford Street for three-quarters-of-an-hour (I left home too late to have longer) to do a bit of Christmas shopping on my way from Vauxhall to Finchley Central. By the time I reached the dentist I had bought books, clothes and various small things and had managed a good half of my Christmas purchases.
At the dentist itself there was much cooing over Bea and Ryan pictures as I had finally remembered to bring some (I've been berated during the last three visits for forgetting). Then I had a good, long chat with the hygenist who is five months pregnant. Sad though it sounds, it was really good to exchange stories about the early months (a sudden hatred of certain foods, problems - or lack of - when giving up caffeine/alcohol, etc) and talk about the stages still to come. How long did it take me to lose the pregnancy weight ? Did I have an epidural during labour ? Is it safe to let a newborn sleep through the night (for those rare ones who actually can) or should it be woken up for feeds ? I felt useful and for once it didn't involve nappy-changing.
Needless to say, the dentist found no problems or this entry would be less upbeat.
Getting back to Feltham was reasonably quick (it was one of those wonderful days where every time I arrived at a station, a train would pull in within three minutes) and I got to watch the twins being put through the bedtime routine (Ryan demanded my lap). Then my parents stayed in whilst
bateleur and I vanished out to the nearby Mexican restaurant.
The local Mexican is at the Feltham cinema complex and is one of a chain. We've gone before and not been terribly impressed, but we fancied a change from the usual curry house. For once we weren't disappointed. The main course was a chicken burrito with rice, salad, refried beans, gucamole and sour cream. The burrito was completely filled with chicken, the servings of gucamole and sour cream were very generous and the overall course was rather fine. Plus my large glass of white wine matched it nicely. Desert had a mexican-esque name but was essentially three large profiteroles filled with Tia Maria-flavoured cream and covered in hot chocolate fudge sauce. They tasted wonderful.
bateleur also enjoyed his meal - burrito (beef - served with chips) and pecan pie (with icecream).
Today I'm due to meet
angry_marmot and
cuthbertcross's cousin Emma at Waterloo. Assuming we recognise each other of course.
