On the day of the dead, when the year too dies

Last night I passed a rather damp set of trick or treaters. Fortunately none have called here yet. [livejournal.com profile] bateleur loves them and I don't, so I prefer him to be in when they call. I've made sure we're well stocked with mini chocolate bars for the occasion.

There has been a bit of writing - a short story finished and an entry to The Guardian's baton exercise. Then there's been the Sorting Out of the Twins Second Birthday (thanks to M & S and Argos on-line, that is). Also I've been involved in the (failing to arrange a) meet up of the Organisation of [livejournal.com profile] cuthbertcross's Hen Night Committee. But, as usual, most of my time has been absorbed by the twins. Ryan has been doing his "Mission Impossible" bit to climb the sofa and reach the light switch (I have photos - if they come out). Also Bea has discovered that running along holding a biro can be a bad idea. She now has a long black line next to one eye that's on a raised red piece of skin (she's lucky to still have the eye).

Besides the usual house jobs, I have had time to finish Final Fantasy (the original).. Had I met it back in the late eighties when it first came out, I would have thought it was brilliant. As it is... it's not bad. The music is nice, I'm not sure whether it's part of the original game or been added with the repackaging though. The movie sequence is short but pretty. More interestingly, I can see where many of the original ideas started from. FF1 has as much in common with those games where you had to collect three (or more) things from a maze as it does with the Playstation incarnations, but it was interesting to see the evolution. However I had to play it with one eye on the FAQ or it would have taken me years. There is little guidance to tell you where to go next or what you're supposed to be doing. My favourite moments included the revelation about who the big bad was (one of the few times they've actually been redeemed), the airship lifting off and Bahamat. But, having been told they were an FF staple, I was disappointed at the absence of Cid, chocobos, mogs and the Biggs & Wedge duo.

The next few days could well be rather busier. Late this afternoon we're driving over to Hounslow to take the twins to the play area to be observed by Bea's physiotherapist. This should be one of the last visits (with luck). Although, if they aren't talking by February, we'll have a whole new set of fun appointments with the speech therapist.

<sigh>

The weekend will be Dragon-blooded, programming for [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and I'll be trying to pull my ideas together for book three. The twins are a bit young for Guy Fawkes displays - but maybe next year.

Then on Monday [livejournal.com profile] frax is coming over to babysit (and gossip, I hope !), to see the new shoes and staying for dinner (when we gain a [livejournal.com profile] bateleur and a [livejournal.com profile] cardinalsin). Which should be fun.

Now I'd better to switch to CBeebies, before Beatrice explodes.
