Homecoming
Episode 9.
Summary: Mohinder hunts down the strange boy with the football whilst his head of department tries to talk him out of believing in the boy's ability. Mohinder discovers that his father carried out exactly the same hunt, also with the head of department. Mohinder then realises that his father was trying to protect him, but that he will choose the same path despite this. He uses "Shanti" to unlock the computer and find his father's list. Eden convinces Mr Bennett that Isaac can be of no further use protecting Claire and so her sends her and the Haitian to the school to intercept Sylar. Nathan receives the painting at the gallery with Simone and, on viewing it, decides that Peter must not see it. The painting gives the name of the high school, but also shows Peter dead. Nathan ruins it, telling Simone that it is to save Peter's life. However, Simone has a photo of it which she gives to Peter, telling him that he must return afterwards. He travels to Texas to meet Ando, but discover that Hiro is still not back and so goes on to the school alone. Claire is made Homecoming Queen through the "freak vote". Realising that Zack had supported her, she punches Jackie, when Jackie insults him. Mr Bennett uses this as an excuse to ban Claire from attending Homecoming, but she and Zack sneak off anyway. Claire runs into Peter who is examining the display about Jackie, believing her to be the cheerleader Hiro spoke of. Sylar then shows up, makes the same mistake and proceeds to kill Jackie in front of Claire, having thrown the latter against the lockers. However, as Claire regenerates, he realises his error and goes after her. She leaves, is intercepted by Peter and he saves her from Sylar by facing Sylar himself and suffering what should have been a fatal fall, except he has mimicked Claire's regeneration. Eden and the Haitian then capture Sylar, away from the school. Jessica purchases a gun whilst Micah convinces DL that Jessica exists. DL then intends to turn around and go back, but for Micah to explain that Niki knows where they are and Jessica shoots DL. Finally, the episode ends with a return to Hiro teleporting back to save Charlie.
Comments: I love this episode; it's fast and it delivers what it promises at the start - an end to this plot arc. All the way through there are various twists and turns offered that could take place (would Hiro return, would Eden somehow save Claire) and there's a question of who will live and die (for example, could Peter have saved Jackie from Sylar?). Whilst the conclusion of the "Save the Cheerleader" painting plot isn't the most unexpected, it's consistent and I found it satisfying. For me, Peter and Claire make a great on-screen partnership (OK, lots of people have said this). A lot of the others are also engrossing though - Nathan is barely on-screen, but he gets a very Nathan scene, and Ando-Peter makes a nice change. Also, Eden really shines. I loved her talking Mr Bennett into (some) reason, and loved her defending Isaac.
Character absences: Matt. Brief appearances from Nathan and Hiro.
Claire/Zack/Jackie/Mrs Bennett: The Claire/Zack stuff really develops their friendship - I really enjoyed all the scenes here. That he gives her Chandra's book and has campaigned to have her made Homecoming Queen (the "freak" vote). However, this episode also has a couple of lovely moments from two minor characters; that Jackie's last word "Run" was to save Claire and that Mrs Bennett supported Claire attending Homecoming.
Hiro/Charlie: Brief, but nice to have a reminder that we're going to see this. Also, Mr Bennett's picture of Charlie makes it clear that she's has the top of her head removed.
Peter/Simone/Ando/Claire: Simone helps Peter, despite being afraid it will kill him and it's a sweet goodbye scene between them. Also, I did feel for him when talking to Ando in the cafe; as he really believes he is about to die (and I liked Ando's concern and attempt to save him). That said, Peter had kind of demonstrated with Nathan in the first episode that he was prepared to take risks over his life for the possibility of being different. Finally, the scenes with him and Claire, as I've said, were great. The scene where he tells her that it gets better after high school is a favourite of mine.
Eden/Isaac/Mr Bennett: Watching Eden telling Bennett what's what was really special. That he accepts it is even better. She's also really good when facing Sylar and telling him what he's going to do.
Mohinder/Chandra: Most of the plot here was really last week, but still nice to see it play out to the conclusion - Mohinder finding the boy and the list. Also, the fact that the head of department chased both Mohinder and Chandra is a lovely touch. The guy has some great lines; something like: - "The great scientists, Einstein and Darwin were ridiculed." "Not by their head of faculty!" One final point here - if we don't get the boy again, then he's possibly the first Hero to leave the series alive at this point.
Sylar: Sylar does evil really well here.
Jessica/DL/Micah: A few short scenes, but they finally end the chase that began two episodes ago as Jessica catches up with and shoots DL. Just as he starts to believe in her.
One final aside - this had the biggest audience of season one, and possibly of the whole show to date. Which probably says a lot about its comparative marketing, but hey.

I think I mostly enjoy the shows more; whilst Supernatural wasn't Heroes it was still reasonable. Although back during the last series of Buffy there were few things more therapeutic than turning out a rant on LJ afterwards.
