Traditionally, the Final Fantasy series has had no sequels in
that they all have no story or world continuity between them.
Thus they are separate games (though with a similar style) and
are numbered. This was fairly easy to understand.
It has now gone a bit odd. X-2 is the sequel to X.
However, Final Fantasy XI, which it would clash namewise with
isn't part of the normal series at all, and really should have
been called Final Fantasy Online.
Even more confusingly, Final Fantasy XII (which is part of the
main series) is apparently set in the same world as Final Fantasy Tactics on the GBA (which isn't part of the main series), which itself is a completely different game to the original Final Fantasy Tactics on the Playstation.
Coming soon (hopefully in March), is Final Fantasy: Crystal
Chronicles on the GameCube, which is also not part of the main
series and is multiplayer, with GameBoy Advances as controllers.

It does almost make sense.
