Cautionary Tales
Heroes episode 32 (episode 9 of season 2). A lovely Hiro episode in the main.
Summary: Bennet and Claire have a huge fight and Claire goes off to school after hurling accusations about Bennet's past with the Company. Bennet admits some of it to Sandra and shows her the sequence of paintings. Meanwhile Mohinder is introduced to his new partner, Elle, who Bob claims as his daughter for the first time. Mohinder decides to take Bennet out his way - involving falsely claiming where West is after a request from Bennet to Molly. Except... having heard Claire defend herself, West tackles Bennet (literally) and the two are trying to come to terms with each other when Mohinder calls. Knowing it's a trap, Bennet brings West along, grabs Elle, but Bennet does not shoot Mohinder after West watches him point the gun and expresses horror. Meanwhile Bob grabs Claire from the Bennet house and takes some of her blood. Bennet arranges the swap of Claire for Elle, Elle breaks out of her bonds and electrifies West whilst he carries Claire away causing both to fall (although Claire saves them by taking the impact). Bennet shoots Elle wounding her, Mohinder returns fire and shoots Bennet in the eye - killing him as in the painting. Hiro attends his father's funeral, but refuses to accept his death. Instead he goes back in time, speaks to Kaito and attempts to convince him to avoid death by taking him to his wife's funeral. However, once there, Hiro meets his boy self, claiming to be Takezo Kensai (true - he's the one from the stories!) and refusing to accept that his parents will die. Consequently Hiro takes Kaito back. Kaito tells Hiro that he is proud of him and proud that he can time travel, then waits for his fate. Hiro watches, now accepting the death, but wishing to identify the murderer. He is astounded to see that it's Takezo Kensai (as Bob has said in the previous episode). Matt is still considering the people in the photograph and determined not to have Molly use her powers again after the last time. Through this he orders Molly not to and discovers he has the ability of "planting a thought" (which I assume they've re-named since it was suggestion in Eden's day). He then uses this on Angela to find out what she knows and asks about the last living person in the photograph that he hasn't met - the woman standing next to his father. At the end of the episode, Bennet is given Claire's blood and comes back to life - in a Company cell.
Naming the episode: From wikipedia: "A cautionary tale is a traditional story told in folklore, to warn its hearer of a danger. There are three essential parts to a cautionary tale, though they can be introduced in a large variety of ways. First, a taboo or prohibition is stated: some act, location, or thing is said to be dangerous. Then, the narrative itself is told: someone disregarded the warning and performed the forbidden act. Finally, the violator comes to an unpleasant fate, which is frequently related in large and grisly detail." Well, yes. Both Kaito and Bennet know they will die... and do.
Comments: I liked all the Hiro stuff in this episode. In particular, that he finally has his father's approval. I also liked Kaito's comments that they had powers like Gods but should not have acted like them. Angela's stuff is also interesting - she tells Matt that they mortgaged their souls to save the next generation (presumably true given she was under his control at the time) - how? And the episode emphasizes that this didn't extend to helping Peter (her conversation with Kaito is replayed for Hiro's benefit). There's also a fair amount of filling in what people say about each other behind the scenes - Sandra clearly knows about Nathan when she remarks that she's found a boy like her father (Bennet: "Because he can fly?" Sandra: "No. You're her real father", implying courage). Similarly, Matt remarks to Angela that Adam's powers are like her granddaughter Claire's. It's often not clear in Heroes how much the characters know that isn't said on camera, but would reasonably have been discussed.
Cast list absences: Again, a lot! Alejandro, Maya, Sylar, Monica, Niki, Micah, Nathan and Peter. Also, only brief appearances from Ando and Adam (in the latter case it's not really new).
Continuity issues raised: Sort of. For Matt to have Eden's power without Eden having Matt's seems odd and makes Matt overpowered - although I guess it's not an error. Also the possibilities raised by Claire's blood mean that anyone could be brought back, which is, again, a bit unbalanced - why not Kaito or any of the other twelve? is there a time limit? Otherwise, it's OK.
Paintings realised to date:
Elle/Bob: So, she's Bob's daughter. And what a nasty father he was, experimenting on her. Also, interesting that Bob notes that the Company gave Bennet Claire so that when they took her back he would be theirs - guessable, but nice to hear outright (and the thing that backfired, although I guess others were willing to leave their kids in).
Claire/West/Bennet: Interesting bonding between Bennet and West. I wouldn't say I loved it, but it marked the end of his Unreasonable Father Suspicion stage, so on balance I approve. Pity Bennet hadn't remembered Elle could break out at any point.
Hiro/Kaito: Lovely stuff and a good ending to the father/son issues that they had. Particularly following Matt's resolution with Maury - which involved no approval.
Mohinder: I wonder, if you left him for ten years (Bennet said it was ten years ago that he thought about the Company in that way), would he finally realise his mistake? I'd like to think so.
Matt: Getting scarily powered here.
