I think VII was the last of the sequence where you could face the end boss (Sephiroth) with a non-powered-up party.
Only just. When I got there I had done loads of stuff (I'd not done all the chocobo stuff because I never got the hang of that, even on later attempts with walkthroughs) though by no means had I gone out of my way to power up. However, I finally only beat him by pure chance I think. It took me about a squillion attempts to beat him to the extent that I wanted to turn around and leave the crater to power up further. Unfortunately I couldn't so I had to just keep soldiering on.
In the end I made it so your point does stand. However, considering I had opened many a can of whup ass on pretty much everything else I had fought (except the occasional damn tonberry) I think it was quite a scary step.
As for the FFVIII end boss... I never properly saw one of the forms since my graphics card couldn't handle it. :) I am still proud of the fact that I still managed to beat it though. :) Mainly because I new the combat system well enough and the menus did jsut about work (since new stuff appeared and if in big trouble I could pause and it would redraw the screen). There was large amount of summoning and powering up the summoned thingy though. Also I think I failed to see one of the GF summonation things. Eden I think it was called... Must replay that at soe point with my newer shinier graphics card. :)
And I will give you a more full write up of the Fallen Star character. Its not going to be that much exciting stuff I'm sure. Maybe a few cthuloid books of occult... Actually maybe not. :)
