sending cold thoughts your way...

Maryland is in fact south of the Mason-Dixon line (http://freespace.virgin.net/john.cletheroe/usa_can/usa/mas_dix.htm), the official delineation between "us" and "them". However, it's not Deep South, which is where they lynch black people and eat Jews.

So far I have only seen a few signs that I am in fact South. They are:
  1. Cheap collard greens/kale/mustard greens. Really. They're $1.29/lb in New York, and $.69/lb here in Maryland.
  2. Wide availability of corn meal.
  3. Preternaturally polite children. No foolin', the kids here say "Sir" and "Ma'am". A little boy on a skateboard nearly ran into me and stopped, turned around and said "Pardon me". I nearly died of shock. My friend Cliff, who is from Georgia (the Deep South) assures me that this is a Southern Thing.

And that's the report from the South so far.
